Describe the room before the light
Think about the activities that happen in the space: preparing food, reading, working, or relaxing. Each activity gives the lighting conversation a useful starting point.
Think in layers
General lighting helps you move around a room. Task lighting supports a particular activity. Accent lighting brings attention to a feature. Your project may benefit from a combination rather than one fitting doing everything.
Notice what you already like
Bring examples of rooms whose lighting feels comfortable. Explain whether you prefer a warmer atmosphere or a brighter working environment, and whether your needs change during the day.
Discuss the controls
The location of switches and the way fittings operate together can matter as much as the fittings themselves. Include control preferences in your brief before equipment is selected.
